A quiet moment at the surface.
Blackfish captures the fleeting appearance of an orca emerging from dark, still waters, its breath rising into the air before it slips beneath the surface once more.
Painted in a muted, almost monochrome palette, this piece was inspired by the raw beauty of the Pacific Northwest and those brief encounters with wildlife that stay with you long after they are over. Soft texture and loose, expressive marks give the painting an atmospheric quality, while flashes of white pick out the distinctive form of the orca against the darkness of the sea.
As a marine biologist and lifelong lover of the ocean, orcas have always held a particular fascination for me. Blackfish is my attempt to capture not simply the animal itself, but the feeling of seeing one in the wild . That moment of stillness, anticipation and connection as it breaks the surface.
An original acrylic painting on A4 paper, Blackfish comes professionally presented in an A3 black wooden frame with a white mount, ready to hang.
